Waste wire

Waste wire

Each winter approximately 1 kilometre of fencing is carried out by the ranger team. This can be difficult work on the steep slopes of Butser, both erecting the new fence as well as removing the rusty old one. There is not sufficient scrap metal value in the old wire,  which could be up to 30 years old, and so this has to be sent to landfill. A 35 cubic metre skip is used to collect the years waste.

Timber fence posts as well as the wood used in all our furnishings, items such as picnic tables and finger posts, contain potentially hazardous preservatives and as a consequence cannot be burned in the biomass boiler, or in any open fire or domestic wood burner. However the material can be chipped and taken to a nearby power station where the emissions are properly dealt with and it is burned to produce energy.

Again about 35 cubic metres of wood waste are processed in this way.

If any of our visitors wish to help with ideas for the recycling of these materials then do please get in touch. In the shop we are currently selling recycled timber waymarks which can be used to make rustic furniture or raised beds for the garden.

The site is committed to a green way of working and has its own Aalborg Action Plan and a Sustainability Trail for educational groups.
