QECP wood barn and chipper

QECP wood barn and chipper

Yesterday Redwood Tree Services Ltd brought in a large chipper attached to a 150 hp tractor. Waiting in the yard was a pile of about 80 tonnes of seasoned softwood, enough to supply our biomass boiler for the whole Winter period.

The Park facilities are heated by an 85KW boiler with a 2,200 litre hot water tank. As a rule of thumb each KW of power needs about 1 tonne of timber per years heating.

For more information about Redwood Tree Services, who come from across the border in Surrey, their blog can be found at www.redwoodtreeservices.co.uk

The softwood was cut over a year ago and stacked to allow the moisture content to fall from about 50% down to 30%. At this point it can be chipped, stored safely and burnt efficiently.

The boiler is set up to burn chip with an average size of 50 mm and a moisture content of up to 40%, this is rated as G50/W40.  Once the barn is full of chip a tipping trailer and elevator are used to transport smaller quantities to the boiler itself. This process takes place about every two weeks depending on the weather.

On the 5th October the Surrey Hills Wood Fuel conference took place. This is an annual gathering for all those involved in the South East wood fuel industry. 188 delegates came along to hear expert presentations and to see demonstrations of the latest machinery.

The presentations from the day will soon be available on the Surrey Hill web-site at www.surreyhillswoodfuel.org.uk

There will be a boiler walk/talk starting at the QECP visitor centre on Saturday the 10th of November lasting about 1.5 hours which will cover the Park’s biomass project from tree to heater. Pre-booking required from the visitor centre on 02392 595040.
